This is the time of year when I wish I were a classroom
teacher so I could apply to an NEH Summer Program in the Humanities. Each year,
NEH offers tuition-free opportunities for school, college, and university
educators to study a variety of humanities topics. Stipends of $1,200-$3,900 help
cover expenses for these one- to five-week programs.
The variety is amazing. You can learn about Cantebury Tales
in London or Communism in American life in Atlanta. Here are a few titles from
the long list of intriguing courses:

- “From Immigrants to Citizens: Asian Pacific Americans in the Northwest,”Seattle, WA
- “The Rochester Reform Trail: Women’s Rights, Religion, and Abolition on the Genesee River and Erie Canal,” Rochester, NY
- “Beyond the Trail of Tears: A View from the Cherokee Homeland,” Cullowhee, NC
- “Exploring the Past: Archaeology in the Upper Mississippi River Valley,” La Crosse, WI
